Haveeru Daily is the longest serving daily newspaper in the Maldives. Haveeru was registered on December 28, 1978 soon after president Maumoon Abdul Gayoom came to power. With the aim to fill the gap created by the absence of a newspaper, with special advice from Gayoom himself and financial support from the government of Maldives. It is owned by a long time family & school friend of Gayyoom: Mohamed Zahir Hussain who has served in several Ministerial positions in Gayyoom’s government.

Over the last 28 years Haveeru’s front page has been dominated by pictures and propaganda of Gayyoom and his cronies. Haveeru serves as a strong supporter and approver of the regime while distracting the suffering public from the corruption and torture the regime has imposed on the people.

We the betrayed Maldivians hope to see a day that there is no Haveeru newspaper in the Maldives. In the large land given to them unjustly from the congested Male’ by the government, we would like to see a park for our children to play freely and to think freely.
